How round robin scheduling works in a league schedule maker

A league schedule maker takes your list of teams and builds the season for you: who plays whom in each round, who is home and who is away, and, if you add them, the date, time and court of every game. This one uses a round robin, so every team plays every other team the same number of times.

To use it, type your team names in step 1, one per line. Pick Single (everyone meets once) or Double (everyone meets twice, once at each home) and your sport, then press Generate schedule. The sport only changes the labels and the default game length, so it works as a basketball, softball, baseball, soccer, volleyball or pickleball league schedule maker. Add dates and courts in step 3 if you want game times; leave it off to get numbered rounds you can play on any night.

The circle method

Round robin generators use a simple trick called the circle method. Put one team in the middle and the others around a circle. In each round, the team in the middle plays one team on the circle, and the rest pair up straight across. Then every team on the circle moves one place and you play the next round. After one lap, every pair has met exactly once.

Here is the whole thing for 4 teams. Team 4 stays in the middle and meets Teams 1, 2 and 3 in turn:

  1. Round 1: Team 1 vs Team 4, Team 2 vs Team 3
  2. Round 2: Team 3 vs Team 1, Team 4 vs Team 2
  3. Round 3: Team 3 vs Team 4, Team 1 vs Team 2

That’s 3 rounds and 6 games, and each team plays 3 games. The team listed first is at home. The home side alternates, so no team has more than 2 home games or 2 away games in a row, and each team’s home and away games differ by at most one.

The numbers grow quickly. With n teams a single round robin has n × (n − 1) ÷ 2 games: 6 teams play 15 games, 8 teams play 28 and 12 teams play 66. An even number of teams needs n − 1 rounds; an odd number needs n rounds, because one team sits out each round.

Round robin schedules for 4, 6, 8 and 10 teams

These tables come from the same engine as the tool above, so they match what you get when you generate a league of that size. Each cell is one game with the home team first. To use one on paper, number your teams (or draw numbers from a hat) and read across each round.

93 vs 65 vs 49 vs 101 vs 87 vs 2

A 6 team round robin schedule takes 5 rounds and 15 games. An 8 team round robin schedule takes 7 rounds and 28 games, so a league that plays once a week is done in 7 weeks. With 10 teams it’s 9 rounds and 45 games. If you need more than one game per team per week, set Games per team per week in step 3 and the tool fits two or three rounds into each week, never more than one game per team per day.

The tool is fair about time slots too. The order of games turns by one place each round, so the same team doesn’t always get the first game of the night or court 1. Check the summary after you generate: it shows every team’s games, home games, away games and byes, so you can prove to coaches that nobody got a worse deal.

When you add dates, games in the same time slot go to different courts or fields, and a round that doesn’t fit on one night carries over to the next game day. Skip dates (holidays, tournaments, school breaks) are left empty and every later game moves back.

Handling an odd number of teams (byes)

With an odd number of teams, somebody has to sit out every round. That round off is called a bye. The standard fix, and the one this tool uses, is to add a pretend “bye” team to make the count even and run the circle method as usual. Whoever is drawn against the bye has the round off.

That gives a fair result: every team gets exactly one bye in a single round robin (two in a double), and there’s only one bye per round. A 7-team league plays 7 rounds of 3 games, 21 games in all, and each team plays 6 games and sits out once. A 5-team league looks like this:

5-team round robin schedule (5 rounds, 10 games, 4 games per team, one bye each)
RoundGame 1Game 2Bye
12 vs 54 vs 31
25 vs 43 vs 12
34 vs 21 vs 53
42 vs 15 vs 34
51 vs 43 vs 25

A few tips for byes:

  • Tell teams early. The summary under the schedule lists each team’s byes, and “Show one team’s schedule” marks the bye round.
  • Byes still count as a week when you add dates, so the team that sits out simply doesn’t play that week.
  • Avoid a bye in the last round of the season if standings are close. Reorder the team list so a different team lands on it, then generate again.

Divisions and double round robin

A double round robin plays the whole cycle twice. The second time through, home and away are swapped, so each pair meets once at each home. For 8 teams that’s 14 rounds and 56 games. Pick Double in step 2 to use it as a double round robin generator. With an even number of teams the second half starts from round 2 instead of round 1, so no team gets 3 home or 3 away games in a row across the halfway point. In every double schedule, a pair’s two games are at least two rounds apart.

Leagues with divisions

Big leagues often split into divisions so the season stays short. A single 12-team round robin needs 11 rounds and 66 games. Two divisions of 6 each need only 5 rounds, with 15 games per division.

To build a league schedule with divisions here, make one schedule per division:

  1. Enter the first division’s teams and generate its schedule.
  2. Download it (Excel or CSV is easiest to combine), or copy the Share link.
  3. Clear the teams, enter the next division and generate again.

If the divisions share a gym or field complex, give each one its own night or its own courts so their game times don’t clash. After division play, many leagues add a few crossover games or a playoff between the division winners, which you can schedule by hand once the standings settle.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many games are in an 8-team round robin?

28 games over 7 rounds. Each team plays 7 games, 4 at home and 3 away or the other way round. A double round robin for 8 teams has 56 games over 14 rounds, and each team plays 14 games, 7 at home and 7 away.

How do I make a league schedule?

List your teams, choose single or double round robin, then decide when you play: which nights, what time the first game starts, how many courts or fields you have and which dates to skip. Enter those in the league schedule maker above and press Generate schedule. You get a round-by-round fixture list, a grid and a summary you can print or share.

How do byes work in a round robin?

With an odd number of teams, one team sits out each round. That's a bye. Adding a pretend "bye" team makes the count even, and whoever is drawn against it has the round off. Every team gets exactly one bye in a single round robin and two in a double.

What is a double round robin?

A double round robin is a season where every team plays every other team twice, once at home and once away. It has twice the games and rounds of a single round robin: 12 games in 6 rounds for 4 teams, 30 games in 10 rounds for 6 teams.

Is this league schedule maker free?

Yes. It's free, with no signup or account. Your league is saved in your browser, not on our servers, and you can download it as a PDF, image, Excel, CSV or calendar file, or share it as a link.
