Estimate only. Overtime here is 1.5× for hours over 40 in a Sunday-to-Saturday workweek, and a shift that runs into a new workweek counts in each week for the hours worked there. Rules vary (for example, FLSA section 7(k) for police and fire), and so do pay periods and shift differentials. Not legal or payroll advice.

What is a 2-2-3 schedule?

A 2-2-3 schedule is a 14-day work pattern of 12-hour shifts: work 2 days, off 2, work 3, off 2, work 2, off 3. You work 7 shifts every two weeks, never more than 3 in a row, and every other weekend is a 3-day weekend off.

That’s the whole rhythm from your side of the schedule. Because it repeats every 14 days, your working days fall on the same weekdays every other week. Once you know which week you’re in, you know your schedule for the rest of the year.

In most workplaces it runs with four crews. Two share the day shift and two share the night shift, so the job is covered 24 hours a day. Each crew follows the same 2-2-3 sequence, just a week apart from its partner crew. The generator above starts with crews that stay on days or stay on nights; switch to Rotating crews to see a version where they swap every two weeks.

You’ll also see this rhythm called 2-3-2, “every other weekend off” and, depending on who you ask, the Pitman or Panama schedule. It’s used outside work too: separated parents use the same 2-2-3 rhythm to share time with their children, which we cover below.

What a 2-2-3 schedule looks like

Here are the 14 days of one person’s cycle, starting on a Monday. The first week holds 5 shifts and the second only 2.

2-2-3 schedule: one person's 14-day cycle
Week of the cycleMonTueWedThuFriSatSunHours
Week 1Day 1: DayDay 2: DayDay 3: OffDay 4: OffDay 5: DayDay 6: DayDay 7: Day60
Week 2Day 8: OffDay 9: OffDay 10: DayDay 11: DayDay 12: OffDay 13: OffDay 14: Off24

Hours count each shift in the week it starts. Day shifts 7 AM–7 PM, night shifts 7 PM–7 AM.

Starting on a Monday lines the 3-shift block up with Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That’s the appeal: the weekend you work is a long one, and the weekend you’re off starts on Friday. In the second week you only work Wednesday and Thursday, so it feels like a week off with a short job in the middle.

A few things to notice as a worker:

  • Your weekdays alternate. Monday and Tuesday are workdays in week 1 and days off in week 2. Wednesday and Thursday do the opposite.
  • No stretch is long. The longest run is 3 shifts, and the longest break is 3 days off: 84 hours from the end of a Thursday shift to Monday morning.
  • The year is predictable. Over 52 weeks you work 182 shifts, the same number as a crew on any other 2-2-3 start date.

Some people write the same cycle as 3-2-2-3 or 2-3-2. Those are the same 14 days, just started on a different day: start this table on its Friday and you read 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off.

2-2-3 schedule hours per week and pay

You work 84 hours every two weeks on a 2-2-3 schedule, which averages out to 42 hours a week. How that splits between the two weeks depends on where your employer’s workweek starts.

With the table above (Monday to Sunday), the split is 60 hours and 24 hours. If your employer’s workweek starts on Sunday instead, as the generator assumes unless you change it, your Sunday shift moves into the lighter week and the split becomes 48 and 36:

2-2-3 schedule hours per workweek, day crew
WorkweekHoursOvertimePay at $25/hr
Week 1488$1,300.00
Week 2360$900.00
Average424$1,100.00

Workweeks run Sunday to Saturday. Overtime is hours over 40 in a workweek, paid at 1.5 times the rate.

Either way, the two weeks always add up to 84 hours, so if you’re paid every two weeks, every paycheck covers the same hours. What changes is overtime. At $25 an hour, the Sunday-start split pays $2,200 per two weeks (4 overtime hours a week on average), and the Monday-start split pays $2,350 (10 overtime hours a week). Night crews come out a little lower, around $2,150, because their overnight hours spill across the workweek line.

Try your own rate in the pay calculator above. It uses your shift times and your choice of Sunday or Monday week start.

How we calculated this

Each hour counts in the workweek it falls in, so a night shift that runs past midnight into Sunday is split between two weeks. The first 40 hours of a workweek are paid at the base rate and anything over 40 at time and a half. We assume 12 paid hours per shift, no unpaid meal breaks and no shift differential. The figures repeat every 14 days, so the averages cover one full cycle.

Treat these numbers as an estimate only, not legal or payroll advice. Your pay stub can differ because of your pay period, differentials, holidays or a union agreement, and for some public employers FLSA section 7(k) may apply instead of the standard 40-hour rule.

2-2-3 custody schedule

A 2-2-3 custody schedule uses the same rhythm to share parenting time between two homes. The child spends 2 days with one parent, 2 with the other, then 3 with the first. The next week it flips, so each parent has the child for 7 days out of every 14: an equal 50/50 split.

2-2-3 custody schedule: 14 days between two homes
Week of the cycleMonTueWedThuFriSatSun
Week 1Day 1: Parent ADay 2: Parent ADay 3: Parent BDay 4: Parent BDay 5: Parent ADay 6: Parent ADay 7: Parent A
Week 2Day 8: Parent BDay 9: Parent BDay 10: Parent ADay 11: Parent ADay 12: Parent BDay 13: Parent BDay 14: Parent B

A = with Parent A, B = with Parent B. Parent A has days 1–2, 5–7 and 10–11 of each 14.

What that means in practice:

  • Weekends alternate. Each parent has the long Friday-to-Sunday weekend every other week.
  • No long gaps. The child is never away from either parent for more than 3 days in a row.
  • Frequent handoffs. There are 6 exchanges every two weeks, about 3 a week, so it tends to suit parents who live close to each other and to school.

To see it on a calendar, tick Custody schedule (Parent A / Parent B) in the generator at the top of this page and set the first day with Parent A as the start date. The 12-month view then shows every handoff for the year, and you can download it or share a link with the other parent.

This calendar is a planning tool only. It isn’t legal advice, and it doesn’t replace a parenting plan agreed between parents or ordered by a court.

Pros and cons of a 2-2-3 schedule

What workers like

  • Short stretches. At most 3 shifts in a row, so fatigue doesn’t build up for a week at a time.
  • Half the year off. You’re off 7 of every 14 days, with every other weekend free.
  • Steady biweekly hours. Each two-week pay period holds the same 84 hours.
  • Easy to swap. Because your partner crew works exactly the days you’re off, trading a shift is simple to arrange.

What workers find hard

  • Long days. A 12-hour shift plus a commute can leave little time for anything else on a workday.
  • A lopsided week. Depending on the week start, one week can be 5 shifts. That’s 60 hours, 20 of them overtime.
  • Changing weekdays. Standing commitments, like a class every Tuesday, clash every other week.
  • Nights on a fixed night crew. If you’re on a night crew, you stay on nights for as long as that crew does, unless your workplace rotates crews.

The 2-2-3 is often a good fit for people who want predictable long weekends and don’t mind 12-hour days. If you’d rather have one long break a month, compare the DuPont schedule, which trades a heavier week for 7 days off in a row.

2-2-3 vs Panama vs Pitman

All three names describe the same 14-day sequence: 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off, with 12-hour shifts and four crews. The difference is mostly in how people use the name.

  • 2-2-3 describes the rhythm itself, and it’s the name workers and parents use when they talk about their own days. It’s the only one of the three also used for custody.
  • Pitman is a common name in police departments and other 24/7 teams, usually with crews that stay on days or nights. Our Pitman page starts with fixed crews and looks at the schedule from a squad’s point of view.
  • Panama is often used for the version where crews rotate between days and nights. Our Panama page starts with rotating crews and shows the whole 4-crew calendar.

Some scheduling guides treat the three names as exact synonyms. If a job posting lists any of them, ask whether the crews are fixed or rotating, because that decides whether you’ll ever work nights.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does a 2-2-3 schedule work?

You repeat a 14-day cycle: 2 shifts, 2 days off, 3 shifts, 2 days off, 2 shifts, 3 days off. Shifts are usually 12 hours. Four crews take turns so that one crew is on the day shift and one on the night shift every day, while the other two are off.

How many days a year do you work on a 2-2-3 schedule?

182 shifts in a 52-week year, or 183 in some calendar years, since 365 days is one day more than 26 full cycles. That's about 2,190 hours at 12 hours per shift, compared with about 2,080 for a 40-hour week.

What is a 3-2-2-3 schedule?

It's the 2-2-3 cycle read from its 3-day block: 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off, then 2 on, 2 off. The days and the hours are exactly the same; only the starting point is different.

Is a 2-2-3 custody schedule 50/50?

Yes. Each parent has the child for 7 of every 14 days, including every other weekend. Over a year the split is even, apart from any holidays or vacations your parenting plan handles separately.

Can a 2-2-3 schedule rotate between days and nights?

Yes. In a rotating 2-2-3, crews work one 14-day cycle on days and the next on nights, so the full cycle takes 28 days. Choose Rotating crews in the generator to see it. Hours and days off stay the same; only the shift times change.
